CALL FOR NETWORKING Transatlantic Network Initiative: Education for Refugees

A 2-day network meeting on "Education for Refugees"

The movement of people through both voluntary and forced migration poses unique challenges for public education systems in receiving or host Girlscountries. In many contexts, educators and educational systems may not be prepared for the unique concerns and real problems that migration and refugee needs pose. Yet, there are examples of programs and contexts where refugee and migrant students are served and may even complement the ongoing education of mainstream students in receiving countries’ schools. We want to address the challenges that youth and educators face posed by refugees and other migrant students in public education systems in different country contexts. For example, in the U.S. there are ‘hidden” refugee populations in immigrant and migrant groups, which challenges educators and education systems to provide appropriate resources to refugees. Whereas, in Europe there are efforts to push refugees to other countries to resolve local tensions. The goal of this network initiative is, therefore, to address both the challenges and opportunities for refugee children and youth, migrant families, and their teachers and educators transatlantically using evidence from original research as well as project-specific experiences.

With this CALL FOR NETWORKING, Alexander W. Wiseman, Texas Tech University (USA), Lisa Damaschke-Deitrick, Lehigh University (USA) and Annika Wilmers from ice at the DIPF would like to invite you to a 2-day network meeting on "Education for Refugees".

The objectives of this meeting are to:

  • Get to know each other as colleagues who share an interest in this topic
  • Present our current interests and relevant projects to each other
  • Jointly generate new topics and ideas for future projects
  • Create collaborative thematic networks for publications, funding proposals, and other future activities

We will design the program based on the applications and also make sure that there is enough space for mutual exchange and networking.

Please register here until 31 May 2019: https://tinyurl.com/RefugeeEducNetwork
