Winter School 2023

"Comparison as a Method in an increasingly fluid world"

Winter School 2023 of the Commission for Comparative and International Educational Science (VIE)

DIPF - Frankfurt/Main, November 30th and December 1st 2023

  • Increasingly global processes of transformation and acceleration mean that researchers working in the field of comparative and international education science will need to investigate into a further development of their own methods and methodologies. Therefore, this year the Winter School will focus on fundamental issues of comparison as a method and thus as a specific perspective of knowledge. What can we assess by means of different comparative designs – and where are the blank spaces? What challenges do comparative assessments face and how can these challenges be captured in methodologically controlled ways? Besides listening two introductory keynotes with comparative-methodological impetus, participants will experience an opportunity to present their own research and discuss pros and cons of different comparative designs – they will reflect on central questions of case selection or the construction of objects of comparison.
For the Winter School, we welcome contributions which present work regarding these or related questions. The Winter School is intended to be a forum for not only completed work but in terms of a workshop, it will be possible to discuss open questions regarding ongoing projects.

Please find the CfP and agenda in the infobox below.

  • The Winter School addresses doctoral and postdoctoral candidates working in international and comparative educational science.

  • Presentations should take 15-20 minutes. They will be thematically grouped into 90-minute sessions (parallel workshops) and scientists from the field will provide feedback.
Moreover, the Winter School will host a workshop on research data management.

  • The Winter School accepts presentations and discussions held in English and German
Prior to the Winter School, we offer an English writing workshop, Academic Writing, beginning on Wednesday, November 29th. Please use the online form for registration (details under "registration"). The maximum number of participants is 12 and participation fee is 80 Euros.
